WK 1: Oh I Think They Like Me
Love Geek Music
BOSTON, MA Friday Jan.6.2006 /FantasyMusicLeague.com/ -- Meet the FML Insider: Learn who has a beef with a British Soccer Mom, why you need to stake your claim in geek music, the latest feud over 'doin it' and how you can win.
Welcome to a new season of the Fantasy Music League, where it's all about who has the digital juice. Each week we put together a few pieces of advice and insight that we come across playing in the league. If you have a question, observation or comment shoot us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org, we look forward to hearing from you.
First we learned about 'screw' music, then 'crunk,' now the latest urban beat making noise out of the South, is called 'snap' or 'geek' music. The next generation southern hip-hop artist pioneering the geek sound is the FML debut artist, Dem Franchize Boyz. Their hit single making its way up the eTracks, 'Oh I Think They Like Me,' has got a sweet sound but Dem Franchize Boyz are already in a musical feud. FML favorites D4L, seem to be having a war of words with Dem Boyz. First the fight centered on which act pioneered the new geek sound but now it has moved to the dance floor. It seems D4L had committed the ultimate sin. Dem Boyz allege that D4L stole the now famous two-step that is referred to as 'doin it.'
The other FML debuting artist that is used to feuding with other musicians is Chamillionaire. Cham is known for his beefs with other artists, including his childhood friends Paul Wall and Mike Jones. However, this time it looks like Chamillonaire has angered the wrong person. No, it's not some drug lord, but rather a British Soccer Mom. Soccer Mom has released her own 'put-down' song on the self-anointed Mixtape Messiah, which she wrote and performed herself. When 'Soccer Mom' aka Shila Mitra was asked if she would make any more 'diss songs' she said that it was the first and last time she would every rap. Honest, we couldn't make this up if we tried. Finally the only other debut artist is alternative rockers, Living Things.
The Game is On
This week the season gets off to a strong start. The question becomes what is your strategy to play? Do you buy the artists that you like, and listen to, or do you buy the artists that have the staying power and juice to win? How well can you mix a drink? Because this is all about how well you can balance country, urban, pop, and alternative artists.
DeadEye Records and Blue Bottle Records take the top spots in the opening week. If you are looking to win cool prizes this season–and you should–check out the free Net Music Countdown Podcast. Happy New Year.
